OIT Technology Checklist, Fall 2016

OIT has put together a list of things you should do before coming to campus, computer recommendations, and some information about technology services around campus.

Storage: 500 GB or greater
CD-ROM: DVD-RW/CD-RW

CONNECTING AT LYNDON

Lyndon offers full wireless coverage in all academic and residential areas of the campus. Wireless is the primary network access in the residence halls. Be sure your devices are capable of wireless connectivity. Wired jacks can be requested during the first two weeks of each semester on a first come, first serve basis.

WHAT NOT TO BRING

Personal wireless access points/routers (D-Link, Linksys, Apple AirPort/Time Capsule, Netgear, etc) are not permitted on the Lyndon network and will be disabled automatically and may be confiscated by OIT or the residential life staff. These devices interfere with the Lyndon wireless network and can cause connectivity issues for other users. Using personal wireless access points/routers can result in judicial action, fines and disconnection from the Lyndon network.

PRINTING

Black and white and color printing  is available 24-hours a day on campus in LAC 344, the 24-hour lab. Students can print from their personal devices and then pick it up in this location with the WebPrint service.

Many personal printers now feature wireless printing. This feature is not supported on the campus network and should be disabled during setup. Be sure to bring a USB cable to hook your printer up.

SECURE YOUR COMPUTER

Make sure your computer (Mac and Windows!) is protected from malware! If your computer becomes compromised, you may be disconnected from the Lyndon network.

Be sure your computer is always patched by enabling automatic updates. This ensures you will receive the latest security updates as soon as they are available.
Install and update malware protection software and then run a complete system scan.

UNINSTALL PEER-TO-PEER FILE SHARING SOFTWARE

Remove software such as FrostWire, BitTorrent, Vuze and similar file sharing programs from your computer.  Illegally downloading copyright materials violates the VSC Conditions of Use Policy and federal law and puts you at risk for loss of service, civil lawsuits and criminal charges.

Use legal alternatives such as Amazon Prime, Netflix or iTunes to obtain music, books, movies, or software. Amazon offers a heavily discounted subscription to Amazon Prime for college students.
